Galloway Walks

Difficulty level B: Distance 8.2 miles: total ascent 2029ft
Parking: at Afton Reservoir Car park (accessed from New Cumnock, from the small roundabout in the middle of town take the B741 to Dalmellington but almost immediately turn left).
Go back along the road for approx. 2 miles, turn right on the track leading to Blackcraig Farm. Just before the farm, turn left on to a hill track and follow the signposts along the track (at some points the track almost disappears but at these points continue straight forward). After c1.5 miles a signpost points up the hill and this should be followed either at that point or from the fence a little further on. Continue upwards until you reach the trig point (total distance from start 4.5 miles). the route now goes south by east with signposts to Black Lorg, via Green Lorg, following a fence down and up again (6 miles from start). Turn west to Cannock Hill and aim for the dip between this hill and the Craigbraneoch Rig to the north (if preferred you can walk to the tops of both the hill and the rig). There is a track of sorts and following this the reservoir comes into view. Aim for the dam at the north end (signposted). It is a short walk from the dam to the car park.
