Home of Dalquhairn / Allan's Cairn Circular
Difficulty Level B: Distance 7.5 miles: total ascent 1162 feet:
Parking is at the end of a narrow road signposted " Water Of Ken", which leads north from the road to Moniaive B729, which in turn starts from the A713 south of Carsphairn. At the road end turn right and park.
Continue by foot along the track in a northerly direction. Just after Lorg Bridge, leave the track when it swings to the left, carrying on over a style and along a path, later going into the forest along a track that is at points quite muddy. When you reach a good forest road At approx 2.7ml., turn right to the Polskeoch Bothy for a short stop. Then continue on the forest road (and you are now on the Southern Upland Way) shortly turning sharp right with the road and climbing. Soon you willsee a sign telling you to leave the road and go left up the hillside. After quarter of a mile the Way goes into the forest and you follow the path till it reaches Allan's Cairn, a good place for lunch. After this continue on the Way which in a little while crosses over the forest road and goes up High Countam, where you turn half left following a fence and climb Black Hill and turn right over to Cairn Hill. The route now departs from the Way, as you continue in a westerly direction to Coranbae Hill where you climb over the fence as if to go into the forest, but use a gate to go onto the hillside to the right. Continue downhill to your starting point ,crossing with care the stream to your right and then crossing back near the bottom (this is easier than trying to go down all the way with the stream on your right).Carry along till you reach the road bridge that allows you to cross th Water of Ken back to the car.
