Circular walk to Craiglee from Loch Doon

By hjt - Posted on 22 January 2008

Route Distance: 7.76 miles Total ascent: 1356ft
Difficulty level: B+ Park car: at Loch Doon Castle car park.

Walk back along the Lochside road in a northerly direction for approx. 2 miles. Just before Garpel Bridge, turn left along a good forest track.Continue for about 1.5 miles, passing the south end of Loch Finlas. At the end of the forest, the track becomes a fairly new path (marked as a cycle track to Loch Bradan). Soon you go through a gate and immediately turn left off the track to enter the Nick of the Loup. As you walk along, on your left is Craigmulloch Hill, and at some point (the choice is yours!) you cross over the fence and climb the hill. When you reach the top continue in an easterly direction, aiming for the more northerly of the two peaks facing you. This peak is Craiglee and has a trig point. Continue eastwards to the Wee Hill of Craigmulloch (different from the first Craigmulloch), from the top of which good views of Loch Doon can be had. Turn south to descend the hill and you will reach a track which takes you down to the car park.

!3th May 2008. Walked this route on a beautiful day with stunning views of most of the Galloway Hills and many of the lochs. Bliss! "Earth has not anything to show more fair . . ."
Incidentally, the site "banner" shows Craiglee from Black Craig on the other side of Loch Doon.
